The term Masala Chai literally means "mixed spice tea". The infusion of tea, spices, dairy and sweetener makes this heady exotic specialty more reminiscent of an Indian meal than of a morning in a cottage garden. This blend of flavors traces itself back to Ayurvedic medicine, it was made popular by the British owned Indian Tea Association during Empirical Times, in order to increase tea consumption in India.
