About Us

Flat Black Coffee Company, opened its first retail store in 2003 in the Lower Mills neighborhood of Dorchester, Boston.  Today, Flat Black Coffee is Bostons largest independently owned roaster, retailer, and wholesaler of specialty coffees.  Co-founder and President, David House, has remained focused on sourcing and delivering only the finest grade single-origin coffees ever since.  Along with his partners and co-founders, wife, Jennifer House and best friend, Jeff Chatlos, Flat Black has grown to operate multiple espresso bars in the heart of Boston, an ever-growing list of wholesale clients in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and has gained national recognition for both competitors and judges in the US Barista Championships.

In 2013, Flat Black won Americas Best Espresso, 3rd place, for the Eastern US and Canada with a single origin Yemeni Espresso!

In 2013, Co-founder Jennifer House became an internationally certified Q Grader.

In 2014, Flat Black won 2nd place in America's Best Espresso competition.

Our name, "Flat Black," comes from Australia.  It is a loose translation of their term for an Americano.  Australians have an unpretentious, yet unabashed, obsession with fine espresso-based coffee culture, and Flat Black is an homage to that spirit.  It just seems so...  American!  And the founders believe Americans deserve better coffee.

Flat Black is committed to ethics and sustainability in the trade of its fine coffees, and equally committed to the quality of both our products and our service.  Begin your journey with us into the world of fine coffees and taste how beautiful coffee can be.  Visit one of our cafes and experience the superior service, the sites, sounds, and tastes that accompany the science and artistry employed by our professional baristas.  Bring some of our exquisitely roasted coffees from rare places on earth to your home, and transport yourself to distant lands.

Along with our own stores, and online, Flat Black coffee is available at:

American Provisions, Milton Fruit Center, Hingham Fruit Center, Whole Foods-Symphony, Foodies
